In the quiet village of Kuttalam, nestled in Tamil Nadu’s Mayiladuthurai district, lives a ten-year-old boy named Pragdiswaran. His story is one of resilience, hope, and the unseen struggles faced by those living with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP)—a rare disease that turns muscle into bone.
At just two and a half years old, Pragdiswaran developed redness around his neck. His worried parents took him to a local doctor, and soon he was referred to a hospital in Thanjavur where cancer was suspected. A biopsy was done. Injections were given. But what followed was devastating: his body began to swell, a reaction that would mark the beginning of a lifelong condition.
Eventually, he was taken to Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore, where doctors confirmed—through a genetic test—that he had FOP. Despite repeated visits to doctors in Chennai and Vellore, the family eventually stopped seeking treatment, disheartened by the lack of options and the long-distance travel. In the past year alone, Pragdiswaran has suffered through three flare-ups—each time without treatment.
But this is not a story of despair. It’s a story of what’s possible when compassion meets action.
A recent home visit by FOP Trust India brought new light to Pragdiswaran’s life. Observing his abilities, the team saw how he played carroms using a small table, how he used a cricket bat to turn on switches, and how he joyfully played with his father and brother despite limitations. With care and attention, they recommended simple changes—a low-level cot, a standing table, a lighter cricket bat—to make daily life easier.
The visit left a deep impression. The family felt supported. Pragdiswaran felt seen. For the first time in a long while, they expressed their willingness to reach out again, to learn more, and to hope for better care.
