Flare-Up Management and Preventive Strategies: July Learnings

July brought important reminders about the urgency and effectiveness of early flare-up management for FOP. With several children—including Ashik and Devananda—experiencing painful swellings, the month’s learnings centered on fast intervention and holistic preventive care.

The FOP Trust responded quickly by arranging online consultations with Dr. Vrisha Madhuri, who prescribed medications tailored to each case. Early treatment helped both children avoid hospitalization, showing once again how prompt care makes a significant difference.

But the learning didn’t stop there. Dr. Madhuri also emphasized long-term preventive strategies. She advised:

  • Daily spirometry and breathing exercises to maintain lung capacity
  • Wearing helmets to prevent head injuries from falls
  • Proper footwear to reduce instability
  • Slow walking techniques to prevent sudden movement injuries
  • Dental hygiene protocols for patients with reduced mouth opening

Parents were also guided on how to procure essential tools like spirometers and helmets through reliable online sources. These were shared directly in family groups for easier access.

These interventions show that flare-up management isn’t just reactive—it’s also about planning ahead. By equipping families with tools, guidance, and a clear response strategy, the Trust reduces both risk and anxiety.

As the FOP community learns together, each experience contributes to a growing bank of best practices. July’s coordinated efforts reaffirm that with informed action, even this complex condition can be handled with resilience and hope.
