Safety First: Helmets, Spirometers, and the Small Tools That Make a Big Difference

Living with FOP presents daily risks, but many of these can be managed with small, strategic tools. In July, FOP Trust India focused on equipping families with essential safety items like helmets and spirometers—tools that may seem minor, but make a significant impact on quality of life.

As mobility changes, children with FOP face higher chances of falls and reduced respiratory function. Helmets help prevent traumatic head injuries, while spirometers support lung health by encouraging consistent breathing exercises. These tools empower families to take control over routine care and minimize complications.

Throughout the month, the Trust shared practical guides on how to use these tools correctly. Links to affordable and quality products were sent to families via WhatsApp and community groups, making access easier. Families were also encouraged to include these tools as part of their emergency preparedness kits.

Dr. Vrisha Madhuri reinforced their use in online consultations, particularly for children who had experienced recent flare-ups or surgeries. Families appreciated the proactive guidance and have started incorporating these habits into their daily routines.

These tools also strengthen the connection between patients and care providers. By tracking symptoms, practicing daily breathing, and avoiding preventable injuries, children can live safer, more stable lives. The Trust continues to reinforce that small tools bring big peace of mind.
