FOP and Independence: Building Freedom Through Support and Care

Every year on August 15, India celebrates Independence Day — a reminder of the sacrifices that brought us freedom. For people living with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), independence means something deeply personal. It’s the ability to move safely, breathe well, and make informed choices about their own health.

Freedom Through Knowledge

Early diagnosis is the first step toward independence. Knowing what FOP is — and how to manage it — empowers families to avoid harmful treatments and act quickly during flare-ups.
The FOP Trust works year-round to provide families with accurate, accessible information so they can take control of care.

Tools That Enable Independence

For someone with FOP, small tools can create big freedoms. Helmets prevent head injuries, spirometers improve breathing, and adaptive footwear supports mobility. These tools reduce dependence on emergency care and give patients confidence in their daily lives.

Community Support as a Safety Net

Independence doesn’t mean facing challenges alone. FOP Trust’s network of doctors, field coordinators, and fellow patients ensures that help is always within reach. Whether it’s arranging a consultation or guiding a family through a flare-up, the community stands strong together.

Looking Forward

Just as a nation’s independence is built on unity, the independence of someone living with FOP grows stronger with awareness, innovation, and support. This Independence Day, we celebrate not only the freedom of our country but also the resilience of every person living with FOP.
